Brühlsche Terrasse

The Brühl Terrace, also known as the Balcony of Europe, is located on the old town side of the Elbe bank and stretches over about 500 metres between Augustus Bridge and Carola Bridge. It was once part of Dresden's city fortress and is a popular promenade for tourists with its magnificent view of the cathedral and the Semper Opera House as well as across the Elbe and beyond to Neustadt. But the Brühlsche Terrasse also offers a wonderful panorama from the opposite bank of the Elbe. Buildings such as the Sächsische Städtehaus, the Sekundogenitur and the Hochschule für Bildende Künste line the grounds. Numerous sculptural elements, such as a bust of the sculptor Ernst Rietschel and the Gottfried Semper monument, as well as the famous group of figures "Vier Tageszeiten", all created by Johannes Schilling, adorn the Brühlsche Terrasse. The former Brühlsche Garten is home to the dolphin fountain with two sphinxes and a monument to the famous painter Caspar David Friedrich.
