The Opel Zoo is located amidst the scenic slopes of the Taunus between Kronberg and Königstein. In a unique way, it presents around 1,700 animals from over 200 species mainly from Africa, Asia and Europe. These include the only elephants in Hesse, giraffes, zebras, meerkats, red pandas, cheetahs, african penguins, ring-tailed and red ruffed lemurs and many more.
Circular paths and nature trails on the 27-hectare zoo grounds provide unobstructed views of the diversely designed enclosures that are otherwise only possible during during observations in the wild.
Showing the animals in social associations, without visible boundaries between visitors and animals, was the goal of zoo founder Dr. h.c. Georg von Opel.
In 2021, the Opel Zoo celebrated its 65th anniversary. During the summer season, keeper talks, show feedings and animal training are offered daily in various working areas.
